Regardless of the few controversies that surrounded president Reagan, it is of my opinion that he is one of the best presidents in the last 150 years. President Reagan can be credited with many accomplishments most noteable is the collapse of the Berlin Wall and communism .He also, along with his wife, declared a war on drugs. The United States enjoyed good economic stability and many Americans revered President Reagan. When Reagan spoke, people listened. He spoke with firm and direct message to anybody, including mummar gaddafi, that the united states will not tolerate anyone who threatens our safty/sovreingty He invaded grenada in 1984 to put down a military coupe. .He even called out the USSR calling them “the evil empire”. He was someone who didnt mind to use the military when necisary. He enjoyed a close relationship with UK primeminister Margert Thatcher. She was very similar to the president, just female!
Last Visit- Gabrielle Schiraldi
This last visit at the center was an interesting one. We got to look at many different documents and see if they were similar to the ones we viewed last visit. Most of the documents were still about discrimination. It amazes me how the documents are still in perfect condition. I am sad that this was the last visit, but I think I, myself will be visiting more!
Visit on 4/1- Gabrielle Schiraldi
During the second visit to the center on 4/1, I was excited to go around the room and look at different groups documents. It amazes me how much discrimination was going on and the government made no changes. Each groups documents were different whether they were letters, or flyers, we got to view different documents which was cool.
Archive Visit
Today was the first time I have ever visited the Brooklyn Society Center and I have to say it was very interesting. My group learned about a flyer called Birmingham or Brooklyn. It really caught my attention how Brooklyn was so oblivious to the discrimination that was going on. Although there was a lot of violence going on in Birmingham, what people didn’t know was that this was happening world wide. I learned a lot visiting the center and I’m looking forward to visiting again!
Gabrielle Schiraldi- REPOST. FIRST ATTEMP ON FEB 14TH. Great Depression
This chapter was about how the Great Depression caused a major decline in U.S employment. President Hoover tried to take small steps in helping the economy. He believed in charities and raising money for public works, but, this never helped. He had the right idea, but, he didnt help because he feared government deficits more than unemployment. At this time the Dust Bowl made things very difficult for the people living in urban areas. People were living in cars and fighting over food. The term they used was hoovervilles. Farmers and businesses weren’t even making enough money to sell food so people were going hungry and the dust was destroying the agriculture and animal life. The World War 1 veterans decided to march to Washington to get there bonus early. They were poor and needed money. Congress said no, so, this had a major effect on Hoover. At this point, Hoover was not liked by the American people. FDR came into play and felt as though he can fix the Depression. His famous line “The only thing you have to fear is fear itself” meant that the American people were using fear as a way to prevent change. He knew that the people wanted a government that was going to take action. FDR used the New Deal as a way to recover. One of the actions FDR took in helping the people was establishing the Social Security Act. This act said that at age sixty-five workers would receive retirement payments funded by payroll taxes. Even though the Social Security Act had some flaws it created a compact between the citizens and the Government. President Roosevelt taught that the American people can join together and solve problems no matter how big or small they may seem.
